CAPD Training under the SAM Project at CMC Vellore
As part of the SAM Project, Tura Christian Hospital participated in specialised training on Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) at Christian Medical College, Vellore.
The training focused on strengthening practical knowledge and skills in peritoneal dialysis, including patient selection, CAPD catheter care, exchange techniques, prevention and management of complications, infection control, patient education, and long-term follow-up. Emphasis was also placed on establishing a structured CAPD programme that can be safely implemented and sustained in resource-limited settings.
The programme provided valuable hands-on exposure and an opportunity to learn from an experienced nephrology and dialysis team at CMC Vellore. It also helped strengthen the hospital’s capacity to offer an alternative form of kidney replacement therapy for patients who may have difficulty accessing regular haemodialysis.
CAPD is particularly relevant for patients living in remote areas, as it allows dialysis to be carried out at home after appropriate training and supervision. For patients from the Garo Hills and surrounding regions, this can substantially reduce the burden of repeated travel to dialysis centres while improving continuity of care and quality of life.
The training under the SAM Project represents an important step towards expanding comprehensive renal care services at Tura Christian Hospital. The hospital remains committed to developing a sustainable CAPD programme and improving access to appropriate kidney replacement therapy for patients across the region.
